A Fine Heavy Backplate, Probably Italian, circa 1595. This backplate is very heavy, and clearly intended to be shot-proof, although it has no proof-marks upon it. It is Continental, very probably Italian, and is beautifully shaped to fit the back of the wearer, elegantly curving up to the nape of the neck, and with an elegant 'fishtail' dart in the centre of the lower flange. It has multiple engraved line decoration around the neck and armholes, with simpler engraved lines around the flange. At the neck it is struck with the batchmark '4', as four dots (see photol below). The neck and armholes are turned outwards, whilst there is no turn to the lower edge of the flange. The overall patina is a deep chocolate brown over general pitting. Dating: This piece dates from the very end of the 16th Century. In addition to the original holes for shoulder straps (now filled with brass rivets), the leading edges of the shoulders have later holes for the attachment of broad plated shoulder straps in the 17th Century manner, so it has been used for an harquebusier or cuirassier armour later in its life. Price: £950 Go to the Contact Us page if you are interested in purchasing this piece. |
